North Korea Threaten to Shoot Missiles into Guam, Pastor: Guam May Be Small, but Our Faith Is Bigger

Catholics in Guam hold a prayer for peace, in the capital city of Hagatna, Sunday (13/08/2017). The worship was held in the shadow of North Korea's missile threat. Archbishop Guam Michael Byrnes, who led the event, called for "caution" amid mounting war of words between the United States and Pyongyang.

"People should pray for a just resolution, as well as caution in words and actions," said Michael Byrnes, as quoted by AFP. Byrnes also reminded the international call for US President Donald Trump to refrain from spreading his statements. Although many people make Guam the center of attention following the North's threat, many people say they are not affected. "I'm really not afraid, because when it's time we die, then that's when we die," said Sita Manjaras (62), a retired teacher from Tamuning.

Meanwhile, Father Mike Crisostomo said the response of the ummah in facing such threats is simply by holding on to faith and continuing to pray. "It will show to other worlds, to other countries, that Guam may be small, but our faith and beliefs are bigger," Crisostomo said. Dora Salazar (82), who traveled 14 kilometers from Mangilao Village to attend the event admitted to praying for North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

"We pray that God touches his heart," Salazar said. What's with Guam? North Korea has spurned and vowed to crush Guam, an island in the Pacific Ocean, which is one of the US military bases. Although small, the island is guarded and protected by the world's most powerful war machine, Deutsche Welle reported on Wednesday (9/8/2017).

Guam, a small island in the western Pacific that is 6,300 km from Hawaii and 3,500 km from the southeast coast of North Korea, is a US colony since 1898. Pyongyang's ruler, Kim Jong Un, recently sparked plans to attack the 350,000-strong island with a nuclear-armed ballistic missile. The reason Guam's strategic position became the mainstay of the US military that requires a gateway to East Asia.

In World War II for example, the US often launched air strikes against Japan from its base in Guam. A similar role was given to the island during the Vietnam war and is now in conflict on the Korean Peninsula and South China Sea. Specter for North Korea No wonder if the existence of Guam a scourge for North Korea. A quarter of the island's territory is used as a military base. A total of 6,000 US military personnel were stationed there. Following the conflict with local residents in military bases in Japan, now
Washington intends to move some of its troops to Guam. It is the existence of two US military bases that place Guam on the world map. In the south of the United States has Apra Harbor, a naval base that is constantly guarded by four nuclear submarines. Every air surveillance mission is also deployed from there. No wonder the US military pinned the nickname "spearhead" on the small island.
In addition to Apra Harbor, the US military also has Andersen Air Force Base airfield, which among others accommodate the squadron pembon with B-52 Stratofortress or B-1B Lancer. Since 2010 the US has also deployed several Ryo-4B Global Hawks reconnaissance planes. Andersen Airbase is also often used to land a NASA space shuttle. Outermost air defense To counter the North Korean threat, the US has since 2013 built the High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) air defense system in southern Guam. Developed in the Gulf War I, THAAD was tasked with destroying missiles without warheads, but with collisions of kinetic energy.
The US also intends to put THAAD on the South Korean border. Not the first time North Korea threatened to attack Guam. Moreover, the small island is also within the range of Hwasong-8 missile, which although estimated to be able to devour a distance of 6,000 km, only fly as far as 1,000 km in trials early last year. However, the threat of a nuclear attack against Guam is now much more real than before.
